Enjoy the proven health benefits of yoga and Sauna

Every second SAturday morning starting May 3rd

Join us for an invigorating and restorative morning  that combines the benefits of a guided yoga class with the therapeutic effects of a sauna session. Starting at the Breathing Space Studio at Mulvarra House Workshop and Retreat Centre at 930 for an hour of revitalising yoga stretches and breathwork, and then followed by a full 50 minute sauna session at the newly built Heron Sauna down on the river in St Mullins.

In addition, with the option of the cold plunge pool at the sauna(should you choose it!), you can add all the immunity boosting effects of an invigorating cold water immersion.

Why yoga and sauna?

Apart from the fact that both a yoga and sauna are both incredibly beneficial on their own, we believe that the combination of the two  actually multiplies the health benefits of both. Lets look at some of those individual benefits and then at how this multiplier effect works

Benefits of yoga

  • Yoga improves strength, balance and flexibility Slow movements and deep breathing increase blood flow and warm up muscles, while holding a pose can build strength.
  • Yoga helps with back pain relief – Yoga is as good as basic stretching for easing pain and improving mobility in people with lower back pain.
  • Yoga can ease arthritis symptoms – Gentle yoga has been shown to ease some of the discomfort of tender, swollen joints for people with arthritis
  • Yoga benefits heart health Regular yoga practice may reduce levels of stress and body-wide inflammation, contributing to healthier hearts.
  • Yoga relaxes you, to help you sleep better
  • Yoga can mean more energy and improved overall mental health
  • Yoga helps you manage stress.

Benefits of sauna

  • Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease: Studies suggest that regular sauna use can reduce mortality due to cardiovascular disease, with some research indicating a potential 50% reduction.
  • Improved circulation: The heat from the sauna increases heart rate and circulation, potentially offering some cardio benefits similar to moderate exercise.
  •  Reduced blood pressure:Sauna use can lead to a decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
  • Stress Reduction and Relaxation:
Muscle relaxation: The heat and the act of sweating can help soothe sore muscles and reduce muscle tension. Less muscle and joint pain
  • Increased metabolism and weight loss
  •  Detoxification Sweat can be useful in detoxing things that live in your fat, like heavy metals.
  • Skin health and graceful aging benefits
  • Improved sleep: Sauna use has been linked to deeper and more relaxed sleep.

A huge amount of scientific research has been done in the last 30 years on both the benefits of sauna and also of yoga for our health.  There are specific benefits for each which are unique but also large areas of overlap where both yoga and sauna have been shown to have measurable benefits. We believe yoga and sauna are the perfect match, the relaaxtion and stress relief found in yoga is made even deeper by a sauna experience.

The Breathing Space studio

This large, light-filled space has commanding views over the Barrow River and surrounding forests, as well as the 7th century monastic settlement of St Mullins itself.  Although it was designed specifically to function as a yoga studio and mediatation space,  it supports multiple uses. It features  a special infra red heating system and a full complement of yoga equipment.

St Mullins: The backdrop the event

  • A unique chance to experience the magic of St Mullins, known as the jewel of the Barrow
  • 7th century monastic site
  • 12th century Norman motte
  • Vibrant cafe and river community
  • Proximity to hikes in Blackstairs mountains and numerous river and forest nature walks
