Yoga offers enormous benefits for people suffering from back pain. In this three day workshop, we will go though some of the most effective asanas (yoga poses) which can provide relief from pain and discomfort for a variety of conditions ranging from scoliosis to slipped disks to muscular pain. The aim of the programme is to equip participants with a toolbox which they can adapt to suit their particular condition. We will draw attention where appropriate whenever a particular pose is especially beneficial for a specific condition. A parallel focus of the programme is the importance of relaxation and stress relief practices, such as meditation, for ameliorating pain. Yoga nidra is another technique we covered in the weekend – an ancient yogic practice, rediscovered in the twentieth century. It can offer significant benefits for those suffering from chronic pain and the associated sleep disorders and fatigue and stemming from this. While yoga does not offer miracle cures it does have proven benefits in terms of pain relief and can help with posture realignment where posture is indicated as a factor. We will also take a precautionary approach and any contraindication for asanas for particular conditions will be emphasised. Another common pitfall with yoga is the keeping up with the Jones mentality in a yoga class. Doing what is comfortable and beneficial for you is what is important and the teacher will not push anyone in the class to do any asana they are not comfortable with. No previous experience of yoga or meditation is required. Supports such as cushions, bolster and blocks will be on hand if you need them. Chair yoga will also be covered. All in all, a very gentle, illuminating and healing weekend.
St Mullins is the perfect place to experience these subtly powerful techniques with its thousand year history of being a pilgrimage center for healing. There will also be ample downtime to allow you to digest both physically and mentally. A gentle mindfulness walk along the beautiful Barrow River is one of the highlights of this special weekend.v
